Shock-Free Snake Safety

Snakes and other harmful desert critters pose significant risks to your pet’s well-being. Equipping yourself and your dog with effective strategies to avoid these dangers is paramount. Building Bonds specializes in private training sessions designed to teach behaviors that enable swift avoidance of potential threats while keeping your dog focused on you, even in highly distracting environments. These skills are indispensable for safeguarding any pet residing in desert areas.

Conventional snake avoidance training often relies on shock collars, administering shocks to dogs upon encountering snakes. Despite claims of effectiveness, many trainers advocate for annual retesting, subjecting dogs to repeated shocks. This raises concerns about the necessity of shock and retesting if the initial training is supposed to be sufficient.

In contrast, our shock-free snake training utilizes humane methods to cultivate safety skills when facing snakes. This approach can be practiced year-round, eliminating the need for shock or other aversive techniques. While it requires dedication and patience, investing time and effort is invaluable in ensuring your dog’s safety.

We offer private sessions at the behavior center for snake training. We generally begin with a Zoom session or sessions to assess/work on your dog’s recall, target, and alert skills. After that, you will move to private sessions at the behavior center. 30-minute sessions are $75 and one hour sessions are $150. You can expect to spend at least three months working with Kim. There are many variables so the time frame can vary depending on factors such as your dog’s skill set, your own skill set, consistency in training, following through with training in between private sessions, your dog’s interest in snakes, etc.

We do not offer toad safety training.

Note: We have discontinued group classes for snake safety. However, if you gather a group of three or more individuals, we are happy to organize a group session for you and your friends/family.

We have a Shock-Free Rattlesnake Avoidance Workshop coming up on November 1, 2025. Please follow this link for more information and to register.

Please read our article published in Pets and Their People on Shock-Free Snake Safety, which describles the general steps in the training process.
